Digital help: How ERPath relieves emergency departments

Key information at the right time: in the latest supplement to the German national daily newspaper "DIE WELT", entitled "Analysis – Secure IT and Medicine" (in German only), Managing Director of eHealth-Tec, Tobias Leipold, explains how our ERPath software makes the work performed in the emergency department more efficient.

These days, days the situation in emergency departments is getting more stressful than ever. In addition to regular emergencies, such as heart attacks, broken bones and other serious injuries, more and more emergency patients are now arriving exhibiting severe Covid-19 symptoms. Under the enormous pressure, the tendency to make mistakes increases. In emergency departments, where life and death are often at stake, mistakes are particularly dangerous. Digital solutions like our emergency room information system, ERPath, provide real support.

Making faster and better decisions

It starts with prioritisation in the waiting room or already in the ambulance: What is known as triage takes place automatically in ERPath after the doctors enter the patients' symptoms and vital signs into the information system. The system determines which patients need to be treated first. The doctors can collate all the information required for treatment. ERPath analyses this information and creates an individual clinical pathway with checklists for each patient based on their medical history. This allows the symptoms to be identified more quickly and the course of the disease can be predicted more easily.

The coronavirus pathway, which was developed in the springtime in line with the guidelines put forward by the Robert Koch Institute and is constantly updated with each new finding, is particularly relevant in the current situation. According to the recently passed Hospital Future Act (KHZG), investments used to digitally upgrade emergency departments with systems like ERPath will be funded by the federal and state governments. Time losses reduced to a minimum thanks to ERPath

The work in the emergency room is not simply finished once patient care is assured, however. A considerable amount of administrative tasks follows afterwards: filing in the forms, forwarding documents, billing. The documentation about the patient has to be completed in line with certain legal requirements and is essential for the further steps in the treatment plan - but this takes a lot of time and prevents doctors from treating newly arrived patients. ERPath automates these steps. The entire treatment documentation can be completed with just a few clicks and the services billed for easily – taking into account all the legal regulations.

The time saved means that resources can be deployed where they are needed most, thus, giving doctors and nurses more time to focus on patient treatment.
